Scientific Management (Pregnancy Care & Lamb Care) in Sheep and Goat

Situation analysis: Scientific management of sheep farming in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, a region characterized by its arid climate, low rainfall (approx. 400mm), and high sheep population (22.78 lakh contributing 12.92%), is essential for improving productivity and reducing mortality. One of the major concerns in mutton production is the lower body weight gain in lambs during pre-weaning phase (first 90-100 days). The low plane of nutrition during the early phase of growth in lambs reduces the immunity and increases the susceptibility to diseases resulting in lower body weight gains and high mortality. Under field conditions nursing sheep are generally on low plane of nutrition leading to poor health, susceptibility to diseases, low weight gains and mortality in extreme cases.

Intervention: Scientific management practices was taken up involving pregnancy care at 4th& 5th month in ewes & lamb care management from 1st month to 3 months of lambs. The intervention was conducted with 30 shepherds with 10 animals from each flock in 2 adopted villages at Sodanapalli&Pothurajukalava villages of Singanamala mandal.

Pregnancy care management- Deworming done at 4th month of pregnant ewes with Hitek oral (12ml) orTriclamar (08ml) for each Ewe. Liver tonics & Multivitamin supplementation done with Brotone S-10ml + Groviplex S-10ml for 10 consecutive days post deworming for 2 months.

Lamb care management- Deworming done at 1st month with 2ml Hitek oral,2nd month with 3ml Nilzan,3rd month with 3ml Triclamar for each lamb. Liver tonics & Multivitamin supplementation done with Brotone S-10ml + Groviplex S-05 ml for 05 consecutive days post deworming for 2 months.

Outcome: Pregnancy care & Lamb care management intervention resulted in reduction of mortality rate from 30% to 10% & birth of lambs with good weight gain (Avg 4.2 kg). The lamb care management resulted in average weight gain of 16 kg per 3 months compared to farmers practice with average weight gain of 12 kg. This reflected with additional benefit of 6000/- in new born lambs due to reduction of mortality. The demonstration resulted in increase in 4kg/lamb/ 3months reflected with benefit of 36 kg weight gain for overall 9 animals & Net benefit of 14400/-. Overall demonstration resulted with net benefit of 20400/- per 10 lambs per 3 months.
