Problem
Sri. G. Ganganna from Rachepalli (V), Singanamala (M) cultivated sweet orange for about 15 years and later shifted to curry leaf cultivation for nearly 10 years. These crops did not provide satisfactory yield and remunerative market prices, resulting in reduced farm income. Afterwards, he started cultivating groundnut but he faced poor yields due to pest and disease incidences, lack of awareness about improved varieties and recommended scientific cultivation practices. To overcome these challenges, he approached KVK, Reddipalli for technical guidance and support.
Intervention
To address this issue, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Reddipalli introduced the improved groundnut variety Kadiri Chitravathi, released in 2017 from the Agricultural Research Station (ARS), Kadiri. This variety is tolerant to major pests and diseases such as leaf spot, collar rot, stem rot, virus, root rot and sucking pests like aphids and thrips. It has about 49% oil content and highly suitable for fresh/green pods. KVK provided quality seed through CFLD demonstrations and provided technical support through trainings on improved groundnut production technologies on pest and disease management practices and also conducted field visits.
Output
After adopting the improved variety and recommended practices, he cultivated Kadiri Chitravathi and obtained a yield of 33.75 q/ha, compared to 20.5 q/ha from commonly grown Kadiri-6 variety. He sold fresh / green pods at Rs.55 per kg which provided better market returns.

Outcome
The improved variety Kadiri Chitravathi showed better tolerance to pests and diseases compared to Kadiri-6 which was affected by leaf miner, helicoverpa, aphids, leaf spot and leaf curl. The improved variety recorded higher productivity and significantly higher net income, thereby improving the economic condition of the farmer.
Impact and Spread of Technology
The successful cultivation of Kadiri Chitravathi by Sri G. Ganganna attracted the attention of farmers from Rachepalli and nearby villages. During the field day organized by KVK, farmers from nearby villages visited the field & showed interest in adopting the variety. Consequently, the variety was adopted in 37 hectares during the next season.
